In a cockroach, the mouth opens into a short tubular pharynx, leading to a narrow tubular passage called oesophagus. This in turn opens into a sac like structure, crop for storage, then to the gizzard for grinding, through the hepatic caeca where digestive juices are secreted. It is then followed by the mesenteron or midgut and then hindgut (includes ileum, colon and rectum) for digestion and absorption. The rectum finally opens out through anus.
